Whoever thinks that this hobby is only about old clocks missed a great example to the contrary at our April meeting. Ward Francillon presented a slide show about a contemporary Minnesota clockmaker, Jim Borden. Ward and Mary went to visit Jim at his shop several years ago, and took the wonderful pictures below. As you can tell, typical is NOT the word to use for his designs. The wooden movements range in size from desktop to many stories tall, all with a complexity and beauty that is unique.
As a prequel to the meeting, our very own Brooks Coleman held an impromptu auction, along with our Mart. Anyone wishing to put an item on the block could have it sold by one of Georgia's best!
The watch people were certainly not excluded. The highlight was an Illinois-Ball 23J 16-size pocket watch brought in by D. Alexander from Tennessee. There was also a railroad ledger from about the same time that was fascinating to peruse.
We're trying something a little different for the June meeting: a covered dish picnic at Kathi and David Edwards' home in Powder Springs (see map and directions below). The program will be a hands-on demonstration of stenciling, or bronzing, and will be given by Charles Schubert of Portland, Oregon. This meeting in particular is open to any and all clock enthusiasts. Please bring a pot-luck dish corresponding to the beginning letter of your last name: A-E, fruit or desserts; F-K, vegetables and casseroles; L-R, crackers, chips, bread, and rolls; and S-Z, dips, cheese, pickles, and olives.
