Due to a scheduling conflict, the Friesian Clock presentation was cancelled. Our President, Randy Grunwell, stepped up to the plate with a hands-on demonstration of marbleizing by dipping.
Randy started by showing several blocks of wood that had been painted with a base coat. For his demonstration, he had both a set of gray and a set of dark green blocks. He also had a plastic container, 2/3 filled with water, to which borax had been added. The water is tested by placing a drop of oil-based (or acrylic) paint on the surface. The drop should immediately disperse across the surface of the water. If it doesn't, more borax is needed for the water.
After the water is ready, Randy proceeded to place drops of paint on the water, alternating colors, and placing each drop within the last. This created a swirling, multi-colored pattern on the water. For the gray pieces, he used alternating drops of black and white. For the dark green, he used a medium green and white. After the pattern in the water is ready, a block was pushed through the paint, and into the water. The paint adheres itself to the block, and simulates marble. The paint on the water's surface is gently blown away from the block to create a hole, and the block is removed and set aside to dry.
It was announced that Chapter 24 will be participating in the "Street of Dreams", a showcase of homes and decorators, from October 7 to November 12. Chapter members will be loaning their clocks for the interior designers' displays in $400,000 to $700,000 homes at Rivermoor Park in Suwanee, GA.
